Product Description

RAD S is a highly effective powder water repellent for gypsum and construction materials based on gypsum. RAD S should be mixed thoroughly with gypsum powder (dry mix) before adding water.

Properties

RAD S is a colorless, free-flowing powder, extremely alkaline in contact with water or moisture. This product was developed to increase the service life and increase the water resistance of building materials based on gypsum used in high humidity conditions or in contact with water (after mixing and solidification of the mixture). This product is used as an additive for gypsum-based construction materials used in wet indoor areas (such as kitchens, bathrooms, garages and socles), i.e. as an alternative to cement systems.

This means that the RAD S is ideally suited for gypsum plasters, putties, grout, glues and self-leveling floors that need to be water repaired in a dry form.

In addition, RAD S provides good miscibility of the dry components of the mixture with mixing water. For alkaline gypsum plasters, for example, 0.1-0.3% by weight (always calculated by the weight of the dry components of the mixture) is sufficient to sharply reduce water absorption (measured in accordance with DIN EN 520, paragraph 5.9.2, for 2 hours under water). For materials with a neutral pH, the RAD S dosage should be 0.4-0.8% by weight.

Large quantities may be required to achieve water repellent properties - in addition to reducing water absorption - for applications in which water impacts are extremely high. To determine the optimum amount of reagent providing the necessary hydrophobic effect, in addition to the above recommendations, preliminary laboratory tests should always be carried out.

Introduction to the recipe

Add the required amount of powdered RAD S (see Properties) to the dry mixture based on gypsum. Stir thoroughly.

Application

Example of laboratory test of plasters based on gypsum and lime: place 600 g of dry gypsum plaster and 1.80 grams of RAD S (the recommended initial concentration is 0.3% by weight) in a 1 liter polyethylene container and mix for 1 minute using a hand held electric mixer. Add 400 g of water to the container and mix with a mixer to completely disperse the gypsum mixture (with additive). Allow the mixture to stand for 1 minute (following DIN EN 196-1). Then add the mixture in four round forms of PVC (opening with a side, diameter 8cm, height 2cm). Remove the remainder with a spatula. As a base, use a flat, smooth, non-absorbent glass or ceramic substrate, free from grease and oil. As soon as the gypsum hardens (usually within 6 hours), rotate the four test pieces (without removing them from the plastic rings) on the side. After 18 hours, remove the gypsum from the molds and place in a drying cabinet for 24 hours at 40 ° C, also placing the samples on its side.

Once the samples have completely dried and cool to room temperature, their water absorption can be measured in accordance with DIN EN 520, paragraph 5.9.2 (more than 2 hours under a layer of water). For the tests, you can also use samples in the form of 4x4x16cm prisms.

Storage

The shelf life of each lot is indicated on the product label. Storage longer than the date indicated on the label does not necessarily mean that the product is no longer suitable. However, in this case, it is necessary to check the properties required for the intended use targets.

Additional Information

For the sake of simplicity, this specification refers only to construction materials based on gypsum. However, the scope of this product includes all dry mixtures based on semi-aqueous gypsum or anhydride.
